Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin have begun construction of a dedicated defence Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facility in India to support C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, strengthening domestic sustainment capability and regional support capacity.
Expanding in-country sustainment for military airlift
The new facility is designed to provide comprehensive MRO services for the Indian Air Force’s C-130J fleet, addressing long-term readiness, availability, and lifecycle support. Establishing depot-level maintenance capability within India reduces reliance on overseas support, shortens turnaround times, and improves operational resilience for a critical tactical airlift platform.
The project builds on a long-standing industrial relationship between Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin, which has evolved from licensed manufacturing into broader sustainment and lifecycle services within the aerospace and defence supply chain.
Scope of maintenance and technical capabilities
The facility will deliver a full range of heavy maintenance and sustainment services, including depot-level inspections, structural checks, component repair and overhaul, and avionics upgrades. Structural restoration and testing capabilities will enable the handling of airframe life-extension and complex repair activities that are typically performed only at specialized centers.
In addition to aircraft-level work, the MRO will support component-level services, allowing more subsystems to be maintained and certified domestically rather than shipped abroad.
Workforce development and supply chain integration
A key element of the program is workforce capability building. The facility will support expanded training programs for Indian engineers and maintainers, developing specialized skills in military airlift sustainment, structural repair, and avionics systems.
The MRO is also expected to create new opportunities for Indian suppliers across the C-130 supply chain, integrating local companies into global sustainment workflows. This aligns with broader efforts to deepen the domestic aerospace ecosystem and improve global competitiveness.
Role within Lockheed Martin’s global sustainment network
The new site will become part of Lockheed Martin’s global network of certified service centers, positioning India as a regional sustainment hub. In addition to the C-130J Super Hercules, the facility is planned to support KC-130J tanker variants and legacy C-130 B-H aircraft in the future, expanding its relevance beyond national requirements.
Such regional hubs are increasingly used to support multinational fleets, particularly for widely operated platforms where standardized processes and certifications enable cross-border sustainment.
Continuity with existing industrial programs
Tata Advanced Systems already plays a central role in the global C-130 program through Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited, which manufactures C-130 empennages and aerostructure assemblies in India. The recent delivery of the 250th C-130J tail from this facility underscores the maturity of the manufacturing partnership.
The addition of an MRO capability complements existing production activities, extending India’s role from manufacturing into full lifecycle support within the aerospace and defence value chain.
Strategic context for defence industrial development
The establishment of a domestic C-130 MRO facility reflects a broader shift toward localized sustainment of critical defence platforms. By combining heavy maintenance, component overhaul, and workforce development, the project supports operational readiness while reinforcing India’s position within the global defence industrial ecosystem.
Within the context of military aviation sustainment, the facility illustrates how long-term partnerships between OEMs and local industry are being used to transition from import-dependent support models toward integrated, in-country lifecycle management.
