Delhi Metro Extensions Begin Service with Alstom Systems

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has begun revenue service on extensions of Line 7 (Pink Line) and Line 8 (Magenta Line), marking another milestone in the expansion of the capital’s rapid transit network. The newly operational sections connect Majlis Park to Maujpur on Line 7 and Majlis Park to Deepali Chowk on Line 8, with further extensions planned toward RK Ashram and Janakpuri.

Alstom is supplying the rolling stock and signalling systems for these extensions, supporting expanded connectivity across the National Capital Territory.

Metropolis Trainsets for Delhi Metro Phase IV
Under a €312 million contract, Alstom is delivering 312 metro cars as part of Delhi Metro Phase IV. The trains are based on the Metropolis platform and are designed for driverless operation.

The vehicles have a safe design speed of 95 km/h and an operational speed of 85 km/h. They are manufactured entirely in India at Alstom’s urban rolling stock facility in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh, the company’s largest such production site in Asia.

The trains incorporate energy-efficient systems and high recyclability rates, aligning with sustainability goals for urban public transport. With this order, Alstom’s cumulative deliveries for the Delhi Metro network exceed 800 cars.

CBTC Signalling and Driverless Operations
For the Line 7 extension, Alstom has deployed the Urbalis Flo signalling system, a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology. CBTC enables continuous train-to-track communication and precise train positioning, allowing higher service frequency and improved operational safety.

The system is designed to support Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), enabling unattended train operation without onboard drivers. With the new extension, the Pink Line will become the first circular line in the Delhi Metro network and the longest metro corridor in India capable of operating at GoA4 automation levels.

Interchange Connectivity Across the Network
The current Line 8 extension provides interchange connections with several key lines of the Delhi Metro network, including the Yellow Line at Badli, the Red Line at Madhuban Chowk and the Pink Line at Majlis Park. These interchanges are intended to improve passenger flow and enable more seamless travel across the network.

Long-Term Collaboration with DMRC
Alstom’s partnership with DMRC spans multiple phases of the Delhi Metro system. The company has previously supplied trains and signalling solutions for the Red Line (L1), Yellow Line (L2), Green Line (L5), Violet Line (L6) and Pink Line (L7) during earlier project phases.

The collaboration was recently extended through a 10-year maintenance contract covering Lines 1 and 2. The agreement includes comprehensive maintenance of trains, plant systems and depot infrastructure at DMRC’s Badli facility.

Beyond Delhi, Alstom has delivered metro systems and rail technologies for urban transit projects in Chennai, Mumbai, Lucknow, Kochi, Agra, Kanpur, Bhopal and Indore, as well as rolling stock and signalling for India’s semi-high-speed regional rail system linking Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut.
