ABB is expanding its manufacturing and engineering footprint in Bengaluru through new facilities for electrification, motion and automation technologies. The investment supports growing demand from sectors such as data centers, transportation infrastructure and renewable energy while strengthening local industrial supply chains.
Context of the Cooperation
ABB’s expansion in Karnataka reflects a collaboration between ABB India and the regional manufacturing ecosystem, including engineering talent networks, supplier bases and infrastructure providers in Bengaluru. The initiative addresses increasing demand for industrial automation and electrification equipment driven by infrastructure projects, hyperscale data centers and electrified transport systems.
Bengaluru has served as one of ABB’s primary manufacturing and technology hubs in India. With the latest expansion, ABB will operate three manufacturing locations in Karnataka employing more than 3,000 personnel across production, engineering and service functions.
The investments align with India’s manufacturing localization strategy, enabling production closer to domestic demand while supporting exports to regional markets.
Technical Solution and Responsibilities
ABB’s Motion business is expanding its Peenya campus with two additional manufacturing facilities covering approximately 6,100 m². The facilities will produce energy-efficient industrial motors and drives, including:
- Flameproof (Ex) motors designed for hazardous environments
- Roller table motors for metals processing
- Smoke ventilation motors used in tunnel and building safety systems
- Low-voltage variable-speed drives and programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
The site will also include a service and training center equipped with digital diagnostics tools and remote monitoring capabilities. These systems allow predictive maintenance and lifecycle support for installed equipment.
ABB’s high-efficiency motor and drive technologies contribute to reduced industrial electricity consumption. Installations deployed globally over the past decade have generated estimated annual savings of approximately 20 TWh.
Deployment and Manufacturing Expansion
At Nelamangala, ABB has established a 16,470 m² multi-business manufacturing campus supporting the Electrification and Automation divisions. The facility integrates production, testing and engineering capabilities for several systems including:

- Smart power technologies
- System interface units
- Gas analyzer system integration
- Excitation systems for power generation
- High-power rectifiers used in chemical and metals processes
Manufacturing of power management solutions for hyperscale data centers will expand significantly at this site. ABB’s low- and medium-voltage systems already supply electrical distribution infrastructure for more than 30% of India’s hyperscale data centers.
The campus also incorporates service laboratories and factory acceptance testing (FAT) capabilities to validate automation systems before deployment.
Applications and Industrial Use Cases
The expanded production supports multiple infrastructure sectors:

Applications and Industrial Use Cases
The expanded production supports multiple infrastructure sectors:
- Data centers: power distribution and rectifier systems
- Metals processing: roller table motors and high-power rectifiers
- Energy generation: excitation systems stabilizing generator output
- Process industries: automated blending systems for paint, lubricants, and pulp operations
Automation staging cabinets and pigging valve assemblies produced at the site support precise material handling and cleaning operations in continuous production lines.
Expected Industrial Impact
ABB announced approximately USD 75 million in new investment during 2026 for manufacturing and R&D expansion, following more than USD 35 million invested the previous year. The program is expected to create over 300 engineering and technical roles.
The localized production model strengthens digital infrastructure and electrification supply chains in India while improving equipment availability, lifecycle service capability and export readiness for regional markets.
