ANDRITZ Secures Major Pumped Storage Order from Tata Power India

As India accelerates its transition toward renewable energy, the primary challenge shifted from generating green power to stabilizing it. Variable sources like solar and wind require large-scale, long-duration storage to ensure the grid remains reliable around the clock. The Bhivpuri Pumped Storage Project in Maharashtra, a collaboration between Tata Power and ANDRITZ, addresses this need through a technological approach that distinguishes itself from standard hydropower installations. By utilizing advanced reversible pump turbines, the project moves beyond simple generation to act as a high-efficiency "water battery" for the regional grid.

Advanced Pumped Storage vs. Traditional Hydropower
While conventional hydropower plants generate electricity from naturally flowing water, pumped storage technology is specifically engineered for energy arbitrage and grid stabilization. The differentiation lies in the electromechanical heart of the plant: reversible pump turbines and motor-generators. Unlike standard turbines, these units are designed to operate in two directions, pumping water to a higher reservoir when energy supply exceeds demand and reversing the flow to generate electricity during peak periods.

This reversible technology offers a response time and efficiency level that chemical batteries or traditional thermal plants cannot match for long-duration applications. In the Bhivpuri project, the integration of three such high-performance units provides the flexibility to balance supply and demand in real-time, effectively neutralizing the intermittency of wind and solar power across Maharashtra.

Strengthening the Grid Through Localized Engineering
The technical execution of the Bhivpuri project highlights a shift toward integrated manufacturing and global engineering standards within the Indian market. ANDRITZ handles the complete scope of the electromechanical systems—from design and manufacturing to commissioning—leveraging its extensive industrial presence in India. This localized approach ensures that the technology is optimized for regional grid requirements while benefiting from a global engineering network.

The Role of Large-Scale Storage in Decarbonization
Pumped storage is increasingly recognized as the most cost-effective solution for large-scale energy storage, often providing a lifespan of several decades compared to the shorter cycles of lithium-ion systems. By securing a 1,000 MW capacity, the Bhivpuri plant becomes a cornerstone of India’s resilient energy infrastructure. It supports the national goal of deep decarbonization by allowing for a higher percentage of renewable energy to be fed into the grid without risking blackouts or frequency instability. This project represents a significant milestone in establishing future-ready power systems that can sustain the demands of a fast-growing economy.
